February 4th, 2022: Café Kaput start the year with Chalk Sketches, the fifteenth album release on the label and the first album by Cate Brooks under her own name.

A very introspective and reflective album, the pieces were written over three years, using a simple approach of composition with (mainly) electric pianos, organs and effects, recorded to four-track cassette.

Cate Brooks offers an insight into the album’s subject matter; “…Chalk Sketches is an honest account of the recent years of my life- somewhat autobiographical. In many ways, I feel the vulnerability of releasing something that was written under sometimes difficult circumstances, but have ultimately concluded that it’s cathartic and honest to do so.”

A highly personal work, exploring life itself- very much existing in the present, using familiar instruments and cassettes to give the project an undeniably analogue (in all senses of the word) patina.

As Cate Brooks herself notes, “…Art is interesting when it reflects the artist like a mirror, without obscurity.” She has achieved exactly this with Chalk Sketches.
